Massimo Meo is a Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist, equally immersed in the realms of film and abstract art. With a BFA in Film Studies from Concordia University, he has worked as a Visual Effects Producer for productions by Warner Brothers, Marvel, and Walt Disney. His debut short film, The Cradle, premiered at Fantasia International Film Festival in 2022, and he is currently in post-production on his long-anticipated project CROCUS. He continues to explore the boundaries of his abstract art, navigating the subconscious through color and pattern. Massimo's passion lies at the intersection of cinema and abstract expression, as he continually pushes his creative boundaries in captivating visual narratives.

His artwork centers on the relationship between the rigidity and delicate nature of the layered mediums. This dynamic interplay encapsulates a clash of conflicting struggles integral to his creative process. Recently, he has been deeply engaged with the theme of control. In this ongoing series, an objective order and rigidity coexist with an apparent sense of chaos. The absence of perfect lines within his work serves as a reminder of the futility of pursuing absolute control while highlighting the inherent beauty that emerges from our acceptance of its elusiveness.

By focusing on the theme of control, he intends to shed light on the illusory nature of its attainment. The relentless pursuit of complete control, personal or societal, inevitably leads to unforeseen consequences and disillusionment. His art weaves a visual narrative, prompting viewers to question their perceptions of control and embrace the delicate dance between order and chaos. Massimo strives to present this realization in a positive light, inviting viewers to contemplate the limitations of control and embrace the inherent beauty of the unpredictable.

Materials & Process

Ink, watercolor, and acrylic are applied to nylon fabric in staggered stages. Throughout the process, the fabric and liquids are manipulated to alter the colors' flow and create new patterns within the image. Once the liquids have dried, only the residual pigments remain embedded within the fibers. The fabric is mounted on a primed canvas where, through the layer of varnish, the pigments are released and solidified to the canvas. Depending on the complexity of the work, sometimes more than one layer of fabric is applied, each with different attributes to achieve the preferred effect.
